Asset Accounting is a sub-area of financial accounting that deals with the recording and management of fixed assets. Fixed assets include items such as land, buildings, machinery or intangible assets.
With Enhancement Package 7 in SAP ECC 6.0, the new Asset Accounting (FI-AA New) is available as an option; with the introduction of S/4HANA, it will become mandatory. The new solution covers all relevant processes across the entire asset lifecycle, which have been both optimised and simplified.
The new asset accounting system is characterised by leaner data structures, which are particularly evident in S/4HANA due to its integration into the new data model.
With S/4HANA, the asset is transferred as a dimension to the central transaction data table ACDOCA, the Universal Journal.
The previous individual tables are therefore no longer required, but remain available via compatibility views.
Even within ECC, the new solution brings significant improvements and simplifications.
All ledgers are now posted in real time, rendering the delta posting logic obsolete. All valuation areas can be posted to directly, and depreciation is calculated on a line-item basis in accordance with each accounting standard.
The new data model in S/4HANA unlocks the full potential of the new component. The asset is integrated directly into the general ledger as a dimension. This ensures continuous reconciliation, rendering reconciliation efforts obsolete. Data redundancies are avoided, as the information is stored centrally in ACDOCA and is no longer updated in parallel across different tables. Users also have significantly more granular reporting options at their disposal.
The asset master record worklist provides an overview of the status of all assets. The assets to be displayed can be selected using individual filter parameters. The system groups the assets according to their status and displays them in list form. The format can be customised to suit your own reporting requirements by simply adding or removing columns. An Excel download option is also available to download the filtered data.
The “Schedule Asset Accounting Jobs” app centralises all jobs within a single Fiori app. From here, you can schedule depreciation runs, recalculate depreciation, and schedule the year-end closing for asset accounting across both company codes and ledgers. The SAP standard provides templates for this purpose, which can be supplemented as required and extended as custom templates for reuse.
A status overview of all scheduled jobs is also available in the app.
The Fixed Assets Grid is one of the multidimensional Fiori apps, allowing users to extend the standard format with additional dimensions as required. This enables every user to build a report tailored to their own needs using drag-and-drop functionality, thereby maintaining an overview of fixed assets. It is also possible to download the report data in Excel format.
With the new Asset Accounting module, SAP has provided an integrated solution that impresses through both simplification and optimisation.
The Fiori apps in Asset Accounting offer customisable and detailed reporting options and provide users with a clear, real-time overview of fixed assets and all associated transactions.
