SAP Digital Manufacturing

With SAP Digital Manufacturing, production orders can be planned, including the available resources, and all follow-up processes can be triggered.

MES solution: SAP Digital Manufacturing

In an increasingly connected and dynamic production world, real-time transparency is critical to success.

SAP Digital Manufacturing (SAP DM) is SAP’s cloud-based Manufacturing Execution System (MES), enabling companies to plan, control and optimize their manufacturing processes end to end. The solution connects the shop floor with enterprise IT, integrates SAP and non-SAP systems, and creates full transparency across all plants.

As a future-proof MES solution in the context of Industry 4.0 and smart factory concepts, SAP Digital Manufacturing provides the foundation for resilient, sustainable and highly connected production. It enables companies to efficiently integrate their supply chain, implement innovations faster, and remain competitive in the long term.

SAP DM at a glance

SAP Digital Manufacturing connects the enterprise and production levels in an integrated system landscape. While SAP S/4HANA or SAP ERP provides central master data such as materials, routings and bills of material, as well as business data such as production orders, SAP DM controls and monitors the manufacturing processes. Via the Production Connector and the Production Connectivity Model (PCM), machines, equipment and sensors on the shop floor are connected and their data is captured in real time. Optionally, edge devices can be used to process data locally and make communication between production and the cloud more efficient. This creates an end-to-end connection between the ERP system, manufacturing and machine data, providing transparency and enabling intelligent production control.

Challenges and solutions

Challenges in today’s manufacturing…

  • Lack of planning reliability: Volatile market conditions and external influences make reliable, stable production planning more difficult.
  • Insufficient transparency for informed decisions: A lack of real-time data and consistent KPIs makes it harder for production planners to manage capacities optimally and identify bottlenecks at an early stage.
  • Inefficient planning processes due to media discontinuities: Paper-based workflows and insufficient system integration lead to delays and limited responsiveness in planning.
  • Limited alignment between planning and the shop floor: Limited connectivity between machines and departments prevents end-to-end, synchronized production control.

… and how SAP DM can solve them

  • Increased planning reliability: Real-time insights into machine conditions, order progress and material stocks enable flexible adjustment of production plans to volatile market conditions and external influences.
  • Optimized decision-making basis: Dashboards with consistent KPIs and complete production data create transparency, allowing bottlenecks to be identified early and capacities to be managed efficiently.
  • Reduced media discontinuities and more efficient processes: Digital production plans and instructions replace paper-based workflows, ensure end-to-end system integration and shorten response times in planning.
  • Seamless alignment between planning and the shop floor: Direct connectivity between machines, employees and departments enables synchronized production control and better resource utilization.

SAP Digital Manufacturing lays the foundation for connected, data-driven and future-proof production.
