Choosing the right warehouse management solution is a strategic decision that requires consideration of various factors.
Rising customer expectations, growing pressure from e-commerce, and increasing supply chain volatility make reliable warehouse management a critical success factor. Choosing the right warehouse management system is therefore essential for companies that want to remain future-proof and competitive in the market. Extended Warehouse Management, SAP Logistics Management, or SAP Public Cloud WM — these are today’s SAP warehouse management systems, which are part of SAP’s strategic portfolio and are undergoing continuous development. They differ fundamentally in terms of functionality, complexity, and use cases—the right choice depends on the individual warehouse profile.
SAP EWM is the most powerful warehouse management solution in the SAP portfolio and has been established on the market for over 15 years. It offers the broadest range of functions: from complex wave management to cross-docking and yard management, all the way to integration with automation technologies such as conveyor systems, AS/RS, and robotics. EWM is available both on-premise and in the private cloud. New features are delivered with every SAP release cycle.
SAP Public Cloud WM is the warehouse management module within SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud (GROW with SAP) and is functionally most comparable to the classic SAP WM—deliberately kept lean, standardized, and without extensive customization options. It covers the basic warehouse processes: goods receipt, stock transfer, and goods issue.
SAP Logistics Management (LGM) is the newest solution in the SAP portfolio and was developed from the ground up. It goes beyond traditional warehouse management and integrates transportation processes, carrier management, and the SAP Business Network for Logistics into a single platform. As a pure SaaS solution, users benefit from biweekly feature updates and rapid implementation.
