The transition to SAP S/4HANA presents companies with strategic and technical challenges. In addition to the greenfield and brownfield approaches, selective data transition is establishing itself as another migration strategy.
It combines characteristics of the Greenfield and Brownfield approaches and is therefore classified as a Crossfield migration strategy. Selective Data Transition brings together the best of both worlds and enables a tailored transfer of data and processes. It allows a technical migration of the existing system to SAP S/4HANA (similar to a Brownfield approach), while selectively excluding or redesigning specific areas, companies, or data structures.
Selective Data Transition (SDT) is a migration approach in which companies selectively transfer data and processes from their existing SAP ERP system to an SAP S/4HANA environment. Instead of transferring all data on a 1:1 basis, selected data areas are migrated, such as relevant master data and transactional data, ongoing business processes, or historically valuable documents. A key element of SDT is the definition of a time slice. This determines the cut-off date or period from which data and open transactions are transferred to the target system, while older, no longer required data remains in the legacy system. This approach reduces data volumes and creates a clear separation between the legacy and the new system.

Organizations choose the Selective Data Transition (SDT) strategy when neither a complete new implementation (Greenfield) nor a pure system conversion (Brownfield) fully meets their requirements. Typical scenarios include:
Key benefit: Flexibility and customization throughout the migration process.
Implementation is typically carried out in several steps:
| Criterion | Greenfield | Brownfield | Selective Data Transition |
| Transfer of legacy data | No or only to a limited extent | Full | Selective |
| Process adaptation | Yes, process reengineering | Minimal | As required |
| Effort | High | Low to medium | Medium to high |
SAP and certified partners provide specialized tools and services to implement Selective Data Transition, such as:
These tools enable, for example, migration at table level or the transfer of entire company codes without migrating the entire system.

With SAP S/4HANA, you set the course for the future. But how can you successfully transition to the new environment? How can you best prepare for the transformation? And what are the costs involved?
We are happy to support you with a comprehensive SAP S/4HANA Assessment.

Close collaboration between IT, business departments, and external experts is therefore essential.

What is the difference between Selective Data Transition and Brownfield?
The Brownfield approach involves a technical migration of the entire system. With SDT, however, data and processes are migrated selectively, providing more flexibility for adjustments.
Is Selective Data Transition suitable for every company?
Not necessarily. SDT is ideal for companies that want to selectively consolidate or restructure. For smaller companies, the effort involved may be disproportionately high.
Can non-SAP data also be migrated?
Yes. With suitable transformation tools, data from non-SAP systems can also be integrated.
What role do tools play in data transfer?
SAP DM< is SAP’s official service area for supporting complex migration scenarios, including Selective Data Transition. In addition, there are partner solutions, for example from SNP, that support companies in implementing a Selective Data Transition.
Selective Data Transition gives companies the opportunity to shape their move to SAP S/4HANA in a flexible, customized, and strategically sound way. It combines the advantages of Greenfield and Brownfield without having to fully accept their respective drawbacks. However, this approach requires careful planning, professional support, and a clear target vision.
Companies that choose this approach benefit in the long term from a modern, high-performing, and optimally tailored SAP S/4HANA landscape.
