Daiichi Sankyo Europe: Holistic Logistics Processes Through the Implementation of SAP EWM

With support from CONSILIO, Daiichi Sankyo Europe is implementing SAP EWM to modernize and automate its logistics operations and improve end-to-end integration. This not only increases transparency but also significantly boosts efficiency.

Daiichi Sankyo is a global pharmaceutical company with Japanese roots and headquarters in Tokyo. It was founded in 2005 through the merger of Daiichi Pharmaceutical and Sankyo and is now one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. Various reputable business portals rank the company among the top 20 in the global pharmaceutical industry and among the top 3 in Japan.

Daiichi Sankyo focuses primarily on the development and commercialization of innovative medicines, particularly in the fields of oncology (cancer), cardiovascular diseases, and other therapeutic areas with high unmet medical needs. Daiichi Sankyo is particularly well known for its leading Antibody-Drug Conjugate (ADC) platform (DXd technology), with products such as Enhertu (in collaboration with AstraZeneca) and a strong pipeline of additional ADCs.

With over 125 years of scientific expertise, approximately 19,700–20,000 employees worldwide, and a presence in more than 30 countries, these pharmaceutical specialists are pursuing the vision of becoming an “Innovative Global Healthcare Company” by 2030 that makes a sustainable contribution to society.
To achieve this goal, company leadership has decided to implement SAP EWM. SAP’s Extended Warehouse Management enables highly complex, automated warehouse processes and offers far more functionality than basic warehouse management. For example, SAP EWM allows for the centralized control of all goods movements. Additionally, the solution provides users with tools to monitor, manage, and control warehouse activities.

The company chose the supply chain experts at CONSILIO in Munich as its implementation partner; they have already installed and successfully launched warehouse management systems for various industry leaders, even within complex system environments.

SAP EWM – ein Baustein der Daiichi Sankyo-Vision

With the support of CONSILIO, the Japanese pharmaceutical specialist has successfully implemented SAP Extended Warehouse Management (SAP EWM), thereby reaching an important milestone in the modernization and scaling of its European logistics operations. The globally active pharmaceutical company has thus established a foundation for increased Docusign Envelope ID: 61687A19-0605-46A7-BF7D-A8CC7C212C69.

Inventory transparency, more efficient processes, and sustainable business growth. This is accompanied by seamless integration into a complex system landscape. The goal was to implement a decentralized SAP EWM system that is fully integrated with the automated high-bay warehouse, the pick-by-light (PBL) system, and the automated guided vehicle (AGV) system. In addition, SAP EWM was closely integrated with S/4HANA and SAP Digital Manufacturing (SAP DM) to ensure smooth end-to-end processes. The project also included the implementation of a mobile solution for logistics processes.

Ein reguliertes Umfeld bedeutet Herausforderungen

The project team successfully navigated regulatory requirements, managed best-before dates and batch requirements, and converted the high-bay warehouse without interrupting operations. Organizational transformation and change management also played a key role.

Project highlights at a glance:

  • 10% reduction in inventory
  • 900 active users
  • 100% integration
  • 50% increase in turnover rate

Fazit

With SAP EWM, Daiichi Sankyo Europe has taken a significant step toward digital, scalable, and transparent logistics processes that will optimally support future growth.

With SAP EWM, Daiichi Sankyo is not only taking its logistics processes to a new level in terms of efficiency and transparency, but is also laying the groundwork for future process optimizations and automation.
