The General Ledger is the central object of accounting in any company. Although the FI/CO module is one of SAP's oldest, the day-to-day business of general ledger accountants turned out to be tedious and time-consuming - especially compared to accounting under S/4HANA. A key feature here, which offers enormous added value, is the use of FIORI.
FIORI is a web-based interface that is used as standard under S/4HANA as part of SAP's simplification. Here, the user works with applications that replace the conventional GUI transactions. FIORI is not just a new design: it is much more a new way of working. The applications are much clearer than the GUI transactions, many transactions are combined in one app, memorizing transaction codes is no longer necessary - this and much more are the advantages of FIORI. How you can specifically optimize your work with the general ledger thanks to FIORI, we highlight here with examples.
In FIORI, the central application for the General Ledger is called "General Ledger Overview" and is a kind of dashboard with individual tiles. Each tile is a set of information: Realized revenue, Accounting documents to be checked, etc. The corresponding value is displayed directly in the respective tile - sometimes with a graphical representation. Thus, the general ledger overview provides an overview of the most important financial areas right at the start - a representation that was unthinkable in GUI. Important key figures from the general ledger can thus be displayed in real time and at a glance. For more information, the respective tile can be used to navigate directly to the report behind it. In a single app, the user can compile an overview of the current status and still flexibly customize the dashboard. The individual tiles can be arranged as desired using drag-and-drop.

If several bookings are pending, the user can easily upload them via Excel. With the included Excel template, bookings can be efficiently and automatically uploaded into the system.
One thing to note about this basically simple app is that the upload template is relatively sensitive. That is, field formats may not be changed, columns may not be deleted or moved, otherwise the upload will fail. However, to make the template clearer or to highlight the relevant fields, columns can be hidden or fields can be highlighted in color.
If it is necessary to compare two balances or two ledgers, FIORI provides a separate application for this purpose. The user fills out a mask with information about the books to be compared and receives a comparison of the data as a result. Various options are displayed as to which data should be evaluated and how precisely.
For various periodic activities in the general ledger, SAP has developed a tool called "Application Jobs". This tool is the central entry point for scheduling a wide variety of jobs such as foreign currency valuation, balance carry forward and others. Here, the user can easily and intuitively schedule periodic activities with the required parameters. From the "Application Jobs" application, the user can set other functions such as scheduling options, output control, posting parameters and more.
Financial accounting is experiencing extraordinary progress with the introduction of FIORI. Where information had to be gathered together, an overview is available at the push of a button.
Current figures can be compiled in real time and prepared quickly and easily with the help of multidimensional apps. The user can design the list preparation individually and no longer has to navigate between many different reports. The applications are intuitive to use and provide a positive user experience. The applications can be used on all mobile devices and thus provide a more flexible application. In addition, FIORI applications are individually configurable - so each end user only uses the apps they need and to the extent necessary for their work.
