Extension of the S/4HANA migration deadline to 2033 with SAP ERP, private edition, transition option

On February 13, 2025, SAP announced an extension of the S/4HANA migration deadline: With the "SAP ERP, private Edition, Transition Option", companies can postpone their conversion by three years - until 2033 - under certain conditions. But who is this new offer from SAP aimed at?

Management Summary

In principle, companies that conclude a RISE with SAP private cloud contract can use the extension. In practice, however, the target group is likely to be primarily large corporations with very complex system landscapes. Although SAP will not announce all the details until 2028, it is already foreseeable that the new extension - following the ECC maintenance extension from 2027 to 2030 - will involve considerable costs. From today's perspective, these costs are hardly affordable for medium-sized companies, and the complexity of the system architectures is usually significantly lower compared to large corporations.

The new offering, SAP ERP, private edition, transition option, will come at an expanded fee in 2031-2033 compared to a comparable ERP cloud subscription before 2031.

Recommendation: Keep migration within the existing time frame

We therefore recommend that all companies that still have to carry out the S/4HANA transformation stick to their current plan and complete the transformation by 2027 or 2030 - with extended maintenance.

SAP ERP, private Edition, Transition Option

The following conditions must be met in order to take advantage of the offer:

  • Conclusion of a RISE-with-SAP subscription with a hyperscaler of choice.
  • Migration of all relevant systems to HANA database before the end of 2030.

Important notes

  • The offer is not an extension of maintenance for existing SAP ECC installations.
  • For customers who wish to continue operating on-premise ECC systems, SAP's known regulations remain in place - standard maintenance ends on December 31, 2027 or extended maintenance for a fee until December 31, 2030 at the latest
  • The product scope is limited to SAP ECC and does not include the entire SAP Business Suite 7. SAP would like to announce further details in advance - as planned today - in the second quarter of 2025. The contract cannot be drawn up until 2028, when SAP will make this option available.
  • In order to be able to subscribe to the new offering from 2031 until the end of 2033 at the latest, a number of preparations are required: SAP HANA is the only supported database for the new subscription offering; a number of other adjustments will be necessary, as third-party technologies, such as older Java versions, will no longer be supported.
  • All systems must have switched to HANA as the database by December 31, 2031 at the latest.
  • Customers will switch to the S/4HANA private cloud by 31.12.2033 at the latest.

Our recommendation to companies that still have to complete the S/4HANA transformation: Stick to your previous plan of completing the transformation by 2027 or by 2030 - with extended maintenance.
