SAP EWM MFS: When is the connection the right strategy?

Modern warehouse logistics is becoming increasingly complex and is often no longer manageable with manual processes. Automation is provided by SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) with its integrated material flow management (MFS).

Modern warehouse logistics is becoming increasingly complex. Companies are faced with the challenge of efficiently managing a growing variety of articles and order quantities. Manual processes are often no longer sufficient. The answer lies in automation, and this is where SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) with its integrated material flow management (MFS) comes into play.

What is SAP EWM MFS?

At its core, SAP EWM MFS is a function within SAP EWM that enables automated warehouse technology - such as conveyor belts, high-bay warehouses, shuttle systems or automated guided vehicles (AGVs) - to be controlled directly. The special thing about this is that it makes separate warehouse management systems (WCS) or material flow computers (MFR) superfluous. SAP EWM communicates directly with the programmable logic controllers (PLCs) of the machines via so-called "telegrams". This simplifies the IT landscape considerably and reduces interfaces.

When is SAP EWM MFS the right choice for your warehouse?

Connecting an automated system with SAP EWM MFS is particularly useful if your company:

1. has a high degree of automation and complex material flows:

If high-speed and high-volume automation systems are used in your warehouse, precise real-time coordination is essential. MFS controls these systems centrally and optimizes the material flow.

2. reduce interfaces and simplify the IT landscape:

Direct communication with the PLC eliminates the need for additional middleware. This results in fewer integration points, lower software latency and faster execution of tasks.

3. real-time transparency and proactive control required:

MFS provides a live overview of the entire warehouse operation. You always know where goods are located and which machines are active. In the event of problems, the system can trigger automatic corrections or alert employees.

4. strives for seamless integration into the existing SAP landscape:

SAP EWM MFS integrates perfectly with SAP ERP and SAP S/4HANA in particular. This creates a "single source of truth" for all logistics data and is a perfect basis for future automation initiatives.

5. scalability and flexibility needed for future growth:

MFS is scalable and can grow with the growing requirements of your warehouse. New machines or zones can be added without having to fundamentally change the entire system.

Alternatives and implementation

In rare cases, such as with very old or proprietary systems that do not support PLC-based integration, a separate Warehouse Control System (WCS) can be useful as an intermediary layer. It should be noted that these cases involve isolated solutions outside the central SAP system and therefore always require access to external service providers for logic and strategy adjustments. A changeover to S/4HANA also requires a new development of the interface technology. The decision should therefore always be based on a comprehensive consideration of the total cost of ownership (TCO), which takes into account implementation, maintenance and future adjustments.

The implementation of SAP EWM MFS requires careful planning, a detailed business process analysis, high data quality and proactive change management in order to involve and train employees at an early stage.

With SAP EWM MFS, you can control your automated warehouse technology directly, reduce interfaces and thus create the basis for transparent, efficient and future-proof logistics.
