BLG Logistics | How Europe's largest logistics service provider increases its sustainability with IBP

Worldwide 1st implementation of SAP IBP in global logistics and transportation network planning.

Automotive Division

The Automotive Division covers worldwide logistics for finished vehicles from production to dealers. The mainstays are terminals at sea, on major rivers and inland, forwarding and transport by road, rail and water, and the company's own technical centers. The focus of activities is Germany. With over 7.3 million vehicles handled per year, BLG LOGISTICS is the market leader in Europe with its automotive logistics.

Until now, there was no suitable planning tool for forecasts and network and capacity planning for these extensive transport and storage volumes. required, which support central coordination of purchasing, manufacturing and distribution processes.

Focus on sustainability

In addition, BLG also wants to use the system to document and optimize its sustainable management. The basis for the CO2 balancing is formed by data from demand and capacity management. In order to make the emissions tangible, BLG's Sustainability Department defines factors according to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol - Scope 1 to 3, which can be used to calculate the emissions. Here, parameters such as terminal processes, buildings and terminals, lighting, technology and storage, and transport processes are included in the assessment. The company can then use these figures to proactively optimize its eco-balance.

The project

With the introduction of SAP Integrated Business Planning, BLG and its implementation partner CONSILIO have opened a new chapter for planning and forecasting comprehensive logistics networks.

For demand and capacity management, the company's complete transport network with terminals, port facilities, rail and truck connections, bases, trade lanes, inland and ocean shipping traffic was mapped. A far-reaching key figure model provides the planner with all logistical details such as storage areas and important infrastructures, tours, turnaround times, loading factors, technical services, qualified personnel capacities and much more.

The planning processes cover all operational areas, from the initial forecast of transport volumes, the integration of customer forecasts and delivery schedules, through capacity planning for terminal, transport and technical services, to the ecological assessment of the entire corporate processes.

In addition to a congestion management system for planning measures in the event of surplus and shortage situations, a dedicated scenario management system has also been implemented to enable optimization potential to be tapped. Strategic and operative reports and dashboards, a wide-ranging alerting system and a rolling planning workflow round off the implementation.

The implementation of SAP IBP for the Automotive division has increased our planning quality many times over, from volume forecasting to detailed planning. Ecology has not been neglected either.
